Evacuation from Florida to Georgia (September 27th, 2022). Hurricane IAN.
Atlanta is the capital and most populous city of the state of Georgia in the United States. With a population of over 500,000 people within its city limits, it is also the cultural and economic center of the metropolitan area known as Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, which has a population exceeding 6 million residents.
Founded in 1837 during the American Civil War, Atlanta played an important role in that conflict due to its strategic location and railway connections. The city was almost completely destroyed by General William Tecumseh Sherman's infamous "March to the Sea" campaign in 1864 but was quickly rebuilt after the war ended.
Today, Atlanta is recognized as a major hub for business, transportation, and culture. It is home to numerous Fortune 500 companies such as Coca-Cola, Delta Air Lines, and Home Depot. Additionally, Atlanta boasts a thriving arts scene with numerous museums, performing arts venues, and festivals.
The city is also known for its rich history in civil rights and is often referred to as the "cradle of the Civil Rights Movement." Martin Luther King Jr., one of the most prominent figures in this movement, was born and raised in Atlanta. His childhood home and the site of his funeral, Ebenezer Baptist Church, are both located here and have become significant tourist attractions.
Atlanta continues to grow and evolve, attracting new residents and visitors alike with its diverse neighborhoods, vibrant nightlife, and abundance of green spaces like Piedmont Park and Centennial Olympic Park.
